CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture.
It’s simple, really: food is grown for nearby consumers who make an upfront investment to support the farmers’ season. Over the last few years the idea has gained traction as more and more people are drawn to the delicious and healthy benefits of buying from a CSA. There are nearly 13,000 CSAs in the United States. For the Tuv Ha’aretz CSA, that translates into incredibly fresh, varied, certified organic, and beautiful produce grown just 34 miles from downtown Portland at Gales Meadow Farm outside of Forest Grove.
Farming requires extensive planning, and a high proportion of the costs occur early in the season when cash flow is scarce. With an eye towards reducing waste, every last piece of Russian Frills Kale, every basket of colorful cherry tomatoes, every sweet Delicata squash you will find in your basket will have been considered under a whole host of questions –
How much space in the bed does it require?
How many seeds do we need to order?
When do we need to plant in order to count on a product being ripe when we need it?
When customers’ investment is made at the beginning of the season, we get to focus on bringing you the most varied and delectable fruits and vegetables, picked at the height of ripeness.
